Supporting resident quilting
The Old Soldiers Home Foundation is excited to support a new a heartfelt initiative that embodies the creativity, dedication, and compassion of the Armed Forces Retirement Home resident community: the Quilt Guild. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we funded a special request to cover the costs of specialized quilting services, ensuring the completion of 20 lap quilts that were delivered as gifts to residents in nursing care just in time for the holidays.
Led by AFRH resident Lisa Munson, quilters lovingly crafted quilt tops by cutting fabric and sewing intricate patterns. However, the final step—quilting the layers together—required the expertise of longarm quilting services, as AFRH does not have the specialized equipment needed for this process.
The Quilt Guild turned to longarm quilting professional Cynthia Gill who generously offered her services at a discounted rate. Cynthia’s skill and commitment allowed these quilts to be finished with exceptional quality and care, making them perfect gifts for nursing care residents.
With the Foundation’s support, the Quilt Guild achieved their goal of completing 20 quilts in time for Christmas. The guild plans to complete an additional 20 quilts by March 2025 for more nursing care residents.
